A major highlight from the 2009 Vendy Awards — “The Choinkwich” from the Big Gay Ice Cream Truck. Yep, that’s a chocolate ice cream sandwich with caramelized bacon. It was freaking delicious!

I’ve been to every one since it started in 2005. I have planned vacations around the Vendy Awards, because I do not want to miss it — quite simply it is my favorite annual NYC event. And it’s all for an amazing cause — the Street Vendor Project.
This year’s deserved winner, Yolanda and Fernando Martinez of the “Country Boys” Red Hook Ball Fields truck:

We’ll find out tomorrow night — Saturday, Oct. 18. If you haven’t bought your tickets for the event, do so now.
In light of the impending arrival of the big day, I thought it would be fun to showcase the top prize winners from the three previous Vendy Awards:
Thiru Kumar, “The Dosa Man,” (Washington Square South and Sullivan St.) won the top prize at the Vendy Awards in 2007.
Samiul Haque Noor from “Sammy’s Halal” (73rd St. and Broadway, Queens) won the top prize at the Vendy Awards in 2006.
Rolf Babiel of “Hallo Berlin” (54th St. and 5th Ave.) won the top prize at the Vendy Awards in 2005.
